Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland.  We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood. We are committed to creating an environment where people can do their best work.  

Our teams are very passionate about delivering high quality, or gold standard patient care and support each other achieve this.  

Across our practice group we offer a diverse range of specialist skills, diagnostic modalities and treatment options.   We also have a strong focus on training and professional development, including residency training programs for veterinarians, in house training programs for nurses and internship programs. Many of our interns have gone on to become registered specialists.  

We are actively involved in the wider veterinary industry participation in professional groups, university programs, continuing education courses and our own annual conference.

Choosing to undertake an internship is an important step in many veterinary careers. The opportunity to learn best practice and be exposed to a wide range of clinical approaches can be immensely beneficial for both recent graduates and more experienced veterinarians.

Position Summary

Our Internship Program offers recent veterinary graduates (and early-career veterinarians) the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in a busy specialist and emergency hospital environment. This structured training role provides hands-on experience, close mentorship, and exposure to a wide variety of medical, surgical, and emergency cases.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside specialist veterinarians, emergency clinicians, and experienced nurses, gaining confidence in clinical decision-making, case management, and patient care in a supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of hospitalised and emergency patients under supervision.
  • Assist with medical and surgical case workups, procedures, and patient management.
  • Perform routine clinical procedures including blood sampling, catheter placement, imaging assistance, and patient monitoring.
  • Participate in emergency and critical care case management.
  • Assist in anaesthesia and perioperative patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records and clinical notes.
  • Attend and contribute to ward rounds, case discussions, and teaching sessions.
  • Communicate professionally with nursing staff, clinicians, and clients under guidance.
  • Develop clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through structured supervision and feedback.
  • Adhere to hospital protocols, clinical standards, and professional requirements at all times.

Desired Skills and Experience

About You

  • Veterinary degree registrable in Australia.
  • Recently graduated or early in your veterinary career (internship experience desirable but not essential).
  • Strong interest in specialist, emergency, or advanced general practice medicine.
  • Eagerness to learn, develop skills, and take feedback constructively.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment with appropriate support.
  • Compassionate approach to patient and client care.
  • Professional, reliable, and committed to clinical excellence.
