Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland. We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood. We are striving to create an environment where people can do their best work. Our teams are very passionate about delivering patient care and support each other to do it. We have a very diverse skill set and can offer just about all specialities, diagnostic modalities, and therapies across our practice group. We have residency training programs for vets, in house training programs for nurses and internships where many of our interns have progressed to become registered Specialists. We are involved in the industry with wide participation in professional groups, universities, continuing education courses and we run our own annual conference.
We are offering a 12-month, full-time Surgical Internship commencing in January 2027 at our Underwood or Jindalee hospital.
This structured training position is designed to prepare the successful intern for the next stage of their career, whether that is in general practice, advanced clinical practice, residency training or specialist small animal surgery.
You will work under the guidance of our surgical specialists and alongside residents, veterinarians and highly skilled nursing teams. The position includes rotations between our surgeons, providing valuable one-on-one time with different members of the surgical team and exposure to a broad range of surgical cases and approaches.
You will work alongside our cohort of rotating interns and gain experience in both the clinical and client-facing aspects of referral surgery. The position may particularly suit someone preparing for membership examinations or intending to apply for a residency; however, applicants with a genuine interest in Small Animal Surgery are encouraged to apply.
Our Underwood and Jindalee hospitals are home to specialists and clinicians across a range of disciplines. This provides opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary case management and develop a broader understanding of referral veterinary practice.
Your responsibilities and learning opportunities will include:
- Supporting the assessment, investigation and management of surgical patients
- Assisting with the ongoing and perioperative care of hospitalised patients, with some weekend and overnight work where applicable.
- Participating in surgical procedures under the guidance of our surgical team
- Rotating between surgeons and gaining exposure to different clinical approaches
- Developing surgical knowledge, technical skills and clinical reasoning
- Communicating with clients and referring veterinary practices
- Maintaining accurate and comprehensive clinical records
- Working collaboratively with specialists, residents, veterinarians, nurses and rotating interns
- Participating in clinical rounds, journal clubs and educational seminars
- Contributing positively to the daily operation of the Surgery service
- Exploring opportunities to present at seminars or contribute to a scientific abstract or publication, where appropriate
