Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland. We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood. We are striving to create an environment where people can do their best work. Our teams are very passionate about delivering patient care and support each other to do it. We have a very diverse skill set and can offer just about all specialities, diagnostic modalities, and therapies across our practice group. We have residency training programs for vets, in house training programs for nurses and internships where many of our interns have progressed to become registered Specialists. We are offering a 12-month, full-time Ophthalmology Internship commencing in January 2027 at our Jindalee hospital.
Choosing to undertake an internship is an important step in many veterinary careers. This structured training position provides the opportunity to develop your clinical knowledge, gain exposure to a broad range of cases and learn from experienced veterinary professionals.
The successful intern will work primarily with our Ophthalmology team while also gaining exposure to Surgery, Internal Medicine and Dentistry at Jindalee, along with the broader specialist services available across our Underwood and Carrara hospitals.
You will work under the guidance of our ophthalmology team and alongside specialists, veterinarians, residents and highly skilled nursing staff. The role includes involvement in both the clinical and client-facing aspects of referral ophthalmology, including case assessment, patient care and communication with pet owners and referring veterinary practices.
This position would suit a veterinarian who wants to strengthen their ophthalmology knowledge and skills, further their career in general practice or begin working towards advanced or specialist training.
Your responsibilities and learning opportunities will include:
- Supporting the assessment, investigation and management of ophthalmology patients
- Assisting with the ongoing and perioperative care of hospitalised and day patients
- Participating in ophthalmic procedures under the guidance of our clinical team
- Developing ophthalmology knowledge, technical skills and clinical reasoning
- Assisting with the primary accession of cases where appropriate
- Communicating with clients and referring veterinary practices
- Maintaining accurate and comprehensive clinical records
- Working collaboratively with specialists, veterinarians, residents, nurses and other interns
- Gaining exposure to Surgery, Internal Medicine, Dentistry and other specialist disciplines
- Participating in clinical rounds, journal clubs and educational seminars
- Contributing positively to the daily operation of the Ophthalmology service
